How long was he going to take? Geez.

I paced the living room, waiting for Eodh to come back down. I hated that he insisted on going up to her room alone. However, I could’ve sworn I’d heard Ava’s voice telling me to let him go. Crazy, I know. That was it. I was going insane. My powers had worn me out and I was officially a lunatic.

The front door opened, and Sam walked in. We’ve all been doing that lately, coming and going without announcing ourselves. Ava didn’t seem to mind. Winston didn’t seem to mind either, which was another oddity. Could the house be worried about Ava too? Or maybe he liked me more now that I had powers. He’d always liked Sam.

I rushed into Sam’s arms and sighed as his warmth enveloped me like a soothing balm. He kissed the top of my head. “Ava is tough. We’ll figure it out,” he whispered.

“Sam?”

At the sound of John’s voice, we turned together. Sam frowned and studied him for a moment. I introduced him. “This is Ava’s dad, John. John, this is Sam.”

Sam nodded as he disentangled himself then held out his hand to the other man. “It’s been a really long time.” He cocked his head at the older man. “How are you not dead?”

Sam knew Luci and I had gone to Milan to get John, he just didn’t know all the details yet.

John shook Sam’s hand. “Long story and I’d like to wait until Ava is awake, so I only tell it once.” He grimace-smiled at Sam. “I hope you understand.”

“Fair enough.” Sam pulled me into his side. “Where are the kids?”

I smiled up at my favorite person on the planet. “Still at Luci’s. I told them I was here if they wanted to come over, but I think it’s best if they stay there while we come up with a plan.” Gods, I hoped we could come up with a plan. “Besides, Phira is over there with them.”

I had to admit that she was great with the kids and had a special way of teaching them about magic without it being an actual lesson. It was especially helpful with Sammie.

Eodh drew our attention by walking down the stairs, nearly halfway down before we noticed him. His footfalls made no noise, even though he was a big guy. His features were void of all emotions, so it was hard for me to read him. Phira had been teaching me how to shield my emotions because Fae and other magical creatures could easily read them. Possibly steal secrets. Oh, how I wanted to steal Eodh’s secrets.

“So,” I said, facing him. Maybe we’d get lucky, and he knew how to help. It would go a long way toward me not thinking him a total creeper if he saved Ava.

No such luck. He shook his head. “I don’t recognize the magic. I tried to imbibe them with some extra strength. Fortunately, it took hold and will help them stay alive until we can figure out what to do.
